Dr. Tarek Kamel Witnesses Third Mtandao Afrika Youth Contest Awards Ceremony

Dr. Tarek Kamel Minister of Communications and IT along with Mr. Yousry El Gamal Minister of Education, witnessed today the third Mtandao Afrika Youth Contest awards ceremony. The contest is part of a youth educational camp for outstanding students who develop websites tackling African issues in local languages.

The contest mainly depends on multinational teams from age 12 to 19 years old. It employs the interactive educational methodologies based on teamwork.

More than 2500 teachers and students from 39 African countries participated in the program, jointly implemented with Microsoft Corp.

The third camp is to take place in Cairo from March 2-6, 2007 under the auspices of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Participating students receive IT and leadership skills training. The number of winners this year is about 80 students from 13 African countries, namely, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Sudan, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

The program is to include the implementation of several management as well as IT programs at the Ministry of Education's Head Quarters, in collaboration with Microsoft Corp. and the US.

During the ceremony, Kamel reviewed the winners' output as displayed on their websites. Several education ministers and ambassadors to participant African countries like Cameroon, Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Niger, Sudan, Uganda and Zimbabwe also attended the event.

This contest is supervised by "Schoolnet Africa", a non – governmental organization headquartered in Senegal. This organization aims at incorporating IT into the educational process which, in turn, helps African youth to take an effective role in the foundation of a global knowledge–based society.

Schoolnet Africa has been established as part of the IDRC's, UNECA's as well as the open South African community's initiative. Schoolnet Africa operates in 32 African countries through a network of partnering schools, NGOs, Ministries of Education as well as international organizations.
